Job Description Summary

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Athletics Department at Shawnee State University is seeking applications for a Head Coach, Women's Basketball & Assistant Athletic Director for Community Engagement position. Under general direction, this position serves as Head Coach of the Women's Basketball program, running all aspects of a program known nationally for its success. The position also serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Community Engagement, as well as the SSU Champions of Character Liaison for the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Directs the Women's Basketball Program
    • Leads the Shawnee State Women's Basketball Program through planning, direction and structure to meet the goals of the institution and the team. Ensures the team operates within the guidelines of the University, Mid-South Conference and NAIA.
    • Provides on-court coaching and game preparation, film evaluation & scouting for both individual and team skill improvement.
    • Develops schedules for practice and competition and ensures the availability and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Oversees travel plans, coordinates video, opponent scouting, etc.
    • In charge of the selection and supervision of volunteer and paid assistant coaches, oversees budgets (operating and scholarship) and determines fundraising plans for WBK. Plays a key role in bringing basketball alumni back to campus for Alumni & Family Weekend (Homecoming) and Hall of Fame.

      e) Recruits, evaluates, and monitors student athletes (WBK players) who represent Shawnee State well in academics, discipline and sportsmanship. Motivates athletes to be good examples to the university community in line with NAIA Champions of Character.

      e)Coordinates, runs, and administers junior varsity and summer camp (individual, team, summer leagues, etc.) programs.

  2. Serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Community Engagement
    • Responsible for K-12 outreach; coordinates interactive opportunities with local youth and middle and high-school teams
    • Works closely with the AD, SID, Development, Communications and Recruiting to become more active in local school systems by arranging visits, events, etc.
    • Helps establish model/policy/procedure to maximize sports camps. Works with CLC and Risk Management to coordinate and maximize efficiencies and follow university policies. Schedules facilities and promotes/markets camps effectively to ensure maximum numbers. Also will establish online payment mechanisms. Assists coaches with budgetary needs such as costs and expenses, purchases and staff payroll.
    • Assists the AD and SSU Development Office in regards to Alumni engagement. Helps coordinate Homecoming, Hall of Fame and other engagement opportunities in regards to athlete alumni.
  3. Acts as the liaison for the SSU Champions of Character Initiatives
    • Acts as the liaison between the NAIA Champions of Character program, Mid-South Conference and Shawnee State University.
    • Acts as the on-campus advocate for the Champions of Character vision and works with the AD and coaching staff to integrate the program into all SSU sports.
    • Monitors coaches' timely completion of online training and provides direction for staff development.
    • Ensures that all SSU student-athletes complete all the necessary CoC courses and any additional coursework the department, MSC and/or NAIA might deem important.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

  1. Bachelor's degree in Sports Management/Coaching or related field
  2. Two (2) to three (3) years related experience
  3. MVR

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Previous coaching experience at the collegiate level or head coaching at the high school level
  2. Demonstrated experience in coaching basketball
  3. Administrative responsibilities, budget managing, staff development
  4. Communication skills and demonstrated success in recruiting qualified student athletes

Preferred Qualifications Summary

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master's degree in related field
  2. Two years of related experience in community service work or athletic centers.
  3. 3. Demonstrated success in coaching and recruiting student athletes.
